Cities and Municipalities

Misamis Oriental is the booming gateway to Mindanao from the northern shoreline part. It has 24 municipalities and one city. Cagayan de Misamis, the then capital, used to be part of it until it was converted to a city sometime in the 1950s.

The only city that Misamis Oriental has so far is Gingoog. Gingoog is currently the domain of the Guingonas. Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona’s wife Ruthie is currently the mayor there. Ruthie used to be former governor of Misamis Oriental.

Briefly, Misamis Oriental had a second city, El Salvador. El Salvador was an industrial city with many factories springing up, notably Asia Brewery and Universal Robina Corp. But because of a two-year long legal battle with other cities, El Salvador’s cityhood was voided.

Beyond that, Misamis Oriental’s 24 municipalities are natural tourist havens whether you are in the serene beaches of Talisayan or you are inside the Manti-anak Zoo in Sugbongcogon. El Salvador, now reverted into a town, is also home to the largest Divine Mercy statue in the world and water emanating from the place is believed to be miraculous. That’s one tourist magnet Misamis Oriental can count. Also wait for the opening of the world-class Laguindingan airport by 2012.
